What is the mind-body connection?
When we talk about the connection between the body and the mind, we talk about this capacity we all have to control our body with our head. Consciously or not.
When we are afraid, our whole body is alert : our heart rate is accelerating, blood flow is saturated and directed to the muscles to be ready to flee from danger. In short, once we send fear signals from an exterior event, our body translates it in a way, and increases the production of certain hormones, regardless of the subsequent consequences.
On the contrary, if we meditate for example, the opposite effect is happening in our bodies. Sweating decreases, heart rate and blood pressure also, breathing is slow, stress hormones are produced very little while the production of anti-aging hormones increases thanks to the production of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. In short, by choosing to meditate and to send signals of « well being » to our brain, it will take the responsibility of maintaining this well-being to our cells.
This mind-body connection would then be this « power » that is available to us and that would link our heart with our head in a way.
By sending well-being signals to our body, we will therefore also send healing signals at the same time. Gregg Braden explains it in his research. If we strive to synchronize our head with our heart, then we restore the inherent capacities of our body.
Bodily healing, and more precisely healing by thought is therefore the capacity, available, free and unlimited that we all have, to be able to heal our body with our thoughts. As if our thoughts were simply that same force of vitality that we want to give to our heart. A force that would therefore be translated into energy.
How is it efficient in the self-healing process of the body?
Our body is made of energy. We must therefore heal this energy. It is not necessarily useful to understand how our body is scientifically energy and how it regenerates; our body will succeed, whether it comes to our consciousness or not.
The only thing that would certainly be necessary to do is to bring a certain consciousness to the body, a consciousness that is still here translated into energy. This energy would even emanate from our thoughts and emotions.
To bring consciousness to the body simply means to deliberately choose to secrete positive energy in our body, sending signals of well-being or fear for example as mentioned above.
As we saw in the article 4 Different Ways Our Body Ingest Energy, our emotions can be classified on a scale of consciousness from shame for the lowest feeling in energy to enlightenment for the highest feeling. However, these emotions do not necessarily have to create negativity. And it is this negativity that we must distance ourselves from in order to lift ourselves up and to heal. And I am not necessarily speaking here of spiritual elevation.
From the moment we create resistance within ourselves, we create negativity. This negativity can even go as far as to create a bodily feeling of suffering.
The problem with negativity, as Eckhart Tolle so aptly put it, is that « there comes a point where you don’t want to get rid of it, once you’ve identified with it and on a deep unconscious level, you don’t want any positive change, because it would threaten your identity as a depressed, angry or unfairly treated person. Therefore, you will ignore, deny or sabotage what is positive in your life. It is even a very common phenomenon.”
Therefore, if you give yourself a moment to synchronize your heart with your head and simply become aware of it, you allow your cells to move freely in your body and thus allow your being to vibrate to its full potential and to express all the magnificence of what it is capable of.
Regenerative medicine is a medicine increasingly recognized for its actions. The best known research is done at the McGowan Institute, USA and at the University of Poitiers, France.
We are beings who are healed all the time and these institutes prove this day by day. Through research, and over the past 40 years, researchers have discovered the extraordinary power of stem cells. They might be able to regenerate almost any part of our body. They might be able to heal us completely, to regenerate us.
Abilities that are shared by several animals and that the magazine Science et Vie quotes as the “advent of the lizard man” so promising are these discoveries. But it is not only the lizard that has the power to regenerate when it loses a limb but the starfish that is ready to drop one of its arms during an attack. What if this power was already within us, present long before this research began? Do we not know that it is possible to remove the liver of a person who has it ill so that it can regenerate?
Why then, if we already have this power within us, could it not be inscribed in other cells of our body?
The natural state of our body is a state of health, that is what it wants to strive for. It is not logical to think that we are always sick or that we would always have to improve in our health. Our body is made to be well and if it is well fed, in every possible way, it has no reason to malfunction.
In what circumstances is it ineffective?
Of course, I’m not saying that these techniques should replace allopathic medicine, but I’m certain of their positive effects on the development of stem cells and the regenerative capacities of our bodies.
Little by little, it will even be possible to function again without drugs. Some techniques even boast of curing mental illnesses. I am far from saying that, but once again, with time, patience and a little goodwill, mountains can be moved.
This is where the body-mind connection will not be effective. When we only have negative thoughts about ourselves and are convinced of the malfunction of our cells.
As I say it in my article On Being Childlike, we must cultivate this unique curiosity that all children hold and that allows us to rediscover the magic of life day after day.
It is like this moment at the end of a yoga session, after the final position Shavassana, or the corpse position, where we take for a moment the shape of a fetus before we can sit again and be reborn to a new day. Discover my article Yoga as a Path to Transformation.
We have the power to be reborn and to create infinite possibilities, everyday. On the spiritual level for one part but also on the physical level.
What prevents it from functioning properly?
As mentioned above, and even if many of us have already heard it and we have not necessarily believed it, a bad lifestyle will definitely prevent the proper functioning of our body.
If I eat badly, I will also feel bad, if I listen to music too loud for too long I will necessarily hurt my ears, if I only watch horror movies my body will be on alert most of the week ; If I do not shower at least a little I will store viruses and bacterias… Ultimately, if I cultivate negative energies, they are the ones I will reap.
If I focus on my pain, I will give it more importance, and as we have just seen, it is one of the ways in which pain is encouraged to stay. Let us not forget that a good diet does not need medicine. This Ayurvedic proverb seems simplistic. And yet, the day we all manage to free ourselves from our destructive habits towards ourselves, we will truly realize it. Find out more about Ayurveda in my article Ancient Science and in more depth soon on the website.
Are there simple exercises to encourage this self-healing process?
The only exercise that is beneficial “simply” requires presence. Simply put, these are the steps:
When you feel an illness coming, enter deeper into that state of being which dwells in the body, be present in that state, remain in that state. Sit or lie down somewhere and be completely present in the body. 10 to 15 minutes, for example, until you feel so alive that the symptoms of this disease are gone. This technique, given by Eckart Tolle in his book Even the Sun Will Die One Day, only works if you react quickly, that you listen to the warning signs. By being more present in your body, you will intensify the light of the presence, he says.
Be present to yourself and allow yourself a daily time to breathe and synchronize your heart with your head. It sounds complicated but just sit down and listen to yourself breathe. Feel your whole body and how full of life it is. You will then be in direct contact with your cells and you will therefore send them positive energies, healing energies. Discover my article on meditation Stop Running and Listen to Yourself.
Listening to oneself also means listening to one’s desires and needs. Sleep when you feel it’s necessary, eat fruits and vegetables that your body asks for.
In these cases, believe me, you will be more resistant to the disease or just ready to welcome it when it knocks on your door.
Yes, I said welcome, not face the disease. Do not try to create more suffering by being in conflict with yourself about this disease. It is there, so let it be and strive to trust your body in the healing it will offer you.
What are the other techniques that exist?
The following techniques may seem simplistic to you but as stated at the beginning of the article, it is the simplest things that prove to be the most effective. Kind of like grandma’s medicine.
Among these techniques we think of meditation, essential oils, food, sleep – find my article Tips for Better Sleep -, binaural beats – this will be the subject of a future article, here is an example with this music to start -, visualization, personal hygiene; and many more.
Life is made to enjoy, to live in joy and to surpass oneself. Do not believe this voice in your head that continually demeans you. It is more or less present in each of our minds and it is simply there to make us grow.
Start now, practice breathing consciously and share the benefits below in the comments.
I sincerely hope that this article has been useful to you and that it has shown you how much we all have the ability to surpass the trials – physical trials in particular – that we encounter.

Are you used to feeling anxious? Scared? Does anyone tried to help you in this matter but did quite the opposite?
In the last article The Mind-Body Connection introduced the subject of always being connected to what we do. This means being aware of our own emotions and desires and acting upon them.
I can assure you that meditation can be a powerful tool for addressing those issues.
Because I have been practicing meditation on a daily basis for 7 years now.
People fail to help you because they are not in your shoes and might address the problem from an angle you don’t really need and therefore, the problem still exists.
Meditation can be your medication.
It can help you overcome your issues, if you know how to use it.
How does meditation can help me?
Why doesn’t it work on me?
Is there a simple tool I can use for helping me meditate?
Those are the questions we are addressing today.
How does meditation can help?
Meditation is simple and practical.
Research shows that simply by sitting down and closing your eyes you can access a level of relaxation that is deeper that deep sleep.
It reduces stress hormones by 30 to 40% where a good night sleep reduces it by 10 to 12%.
It increases serotonin, prolactin, oxytocin and reduces blood pressure. It even increases the production of anti-aging hormones.
It is more effective that any other relaxation techniques.
Research also shows that it makes new connection in the brain. If you scan the brain of someone that is meditating, you will see connection happening in the left and right side of his brain as well as in the back and front of it.
Which results in making us make better decisions, have better judgment because we allow the part of the brain responsible for this -the pre frontal cortex- to be well fed in oxygen particularly.
Meditation helps us become our best self.
When I was starting meditation, I encountered a wonderful teacher that helped me understand that I was embodying letting go thanks to meditation.
After a 45 minute mediation I had with him, we all shared our experience. At that time I had a hard time staying still, I always had to readjust my position or even just was disturbed by my own clothes. I explained him that I finally was able to tell myself during that single meditation that it could wait, that for this moment I was able to stay still and wait for the end of the meditation for moving or even for thinking about something else I had in mind.
He congratulated the effort and showed me that my meditation journey was on the good path.
Meditation doesn’t always work
Meditation can work for everyone, but it can also worsen the very thing you’re trying to meditate for. This is because there are several types of meditation.
Of course, if you look online, everyone is going to tell you that their technique is the best one there is but this is just a lie. Unfortunately those are the ones that are going to be the closest to sectarianism.
As a matter of fact, you can choose what type of meditation you want to do according to what you’re doing it for.
Before choosing the type of meditation you’re going to dedicate yourself to, you should ask yourself those questions :
What is the goal of my mediation? Do you want to feel more free, let go a situation in particular, understand something …
Which sense do you prefer? Some meditation will be more visual when others might be more auditory …
Which aspect do you want to develop the most? Patience, love, spirituality, memory, focus …
We will go through the types of meditation in a later article but for now I would suggest any beginner to try and start with those types of meditation :
Yoga nidra : this is actually the simplest one I was given to try. You just lay down on your back and let yourself be guided by the voice of your meditation teacher.
Spinal breathing : which will help your anxiety as well as mantra and mindfulness meditation.
Inner silence : lead you to know yourself, deal with your confusion or restlessness.
Learn to overcome your fear thanks to a simple tool
I’m using fear as an example here and the tool I’m going to share with you can be used with any emotions you’re having difficult times with.
The tool I’m sharing with you comes from another meditation teacher I had and uses the technical memo RAIN.
RAIN stands for Recognise, Allow, Investigate, Nurture.
Recognise : name your fear.
Allow : do not judge it but instead allow it to be here.
Investigate : feel where it lives in your body and what sensation it brings you.
Nurture : use your own kindness and care to begin being present with the fear.
After the rain, feel the shift that has happened from the fearful self when you started to that space of compassionate presence.
Want some help?
I can now tell you that soon, an online meditation course will be available on the blog. It is a 21 day challenge designed for discovering meditation where I teach you the fundamentals of mediation in a progressive way. The first day of the challenge will include 1 minute of meditation the second day 2 minutes, the third day 3 minutes and so on until 21 minutes of meditation for day 21.
Be sure to stay tuned, more information about this in a few weeks.
I hope you enjoyed this article and that it gave you a clearer idea of what meditation can do for you.
Don’t forget to subscribe to the newsletter at the bottom of the page to receive all the latest articles.
In the meantime, remember that everything you do can be turned into meditation, from sitting to making dishes and running. It only takes conscious presence in what you are doing.
We all need to sleep better. Because sleep is what help us recharge our batteries. But did you know that we often don’t sleep well enough because of habits we have?
According to what Dr M. Breus said, we don’t sleep well because our bodies are not able to attain that deep sleep state where they can properly rest. I’m talking about REM sleep and this is actually essential for us to wake up rested in the morning.
Do you also feel like you have enough time to sleep but still wake up tired, no matter the time you go to bed? Then, continue reading to discover the 5 tips Dr Breus advises us to follow to perform at our best everyday.
1 – One wake up time
You need to choose one wake up time. No matter the hour, you have to be consistent with yourself.
Yes, only one. Even on the weekends. Your body needs to have that routine to properly adapt to your environment.
Only then will you be able to even wake up without any alarm. By choosing to wake up everyday at the same time, you will even find yourself planning your day in the good way. And even be consistent in your everyday life.
2 – Caffeine
We almost all drink coffee. And everyone knows that coffee, as almost everything in life, can be harmful if we drink too much of it.
As a matter of fact, our body needs about 6 to 8 hours to eliminate coffee.
So, we have to stop drinking coffee by 2 pm if we want to sleep well.
3 – Alcohol
Basically, in the same sense as coffee, if we want our bodies to eliminate alcohol properly, we should drink one cup of water for every glass of alcohol we drink, and wait one hour before going to bed.
Actually, in order for alcohol not to affect the physical restoration of the body during sleep – because it does affect it, alcohol make your body skip REM sleep and even lead you to snore sometimes – we need to be aware of our consumption of it.
If you have more than 3 glasses, Dr Breus advises you to simply stop drinking alcohol 3 hours before going to bed.
4 – Exercise daily
We all understand that exercising is essential to a healthy lifestyle but we should also choose when we exercise. In fact, exercising increase our body temperature and brings the wrong signal to our brains in order to sleep.
Dr Breus also advises anyone with problem sleeping to try and have a warm bath before going to bed. This will cool off your body and then send signals to your brain that it is time to go to bed, because our body temperature decreases once out of the water.
Tip # 4 is then to stop exercising 4 hours before bed.
5 – Water and sunlight
Usually, when we wake up, we don’t necessarily need more sleep, we are tired because our body needs to be hydrated and feel the sunlight.
And guess what, if you take time to go outside in the morning, you actually taking time to yourself and then you have time to dedicated to your daily meditation. Check my article about meditation if you didn’t have time already : Stop running and Listen to Yourself.
As soon as you get out of bed, drink about 20 ounces of water and get 15 minutes of sunlight.
I guarantee you, if you follow those tips, you will have a better sleep and then a better life. Only when you listen to yourself can you be productive and creative in your everyday life.
Do you also feel the need for more simplicity? New methods for “eating better” and “feeling better” are beyond you?
Ayurveda is a science sister to yoga – my article about Yoga as a Path to Transformation is also available – that wants to equilibrate our mind and body so we can live in harmony with our mental, physical and emotional health.
A lot of people are used to running to the doctor once they are hurting somewhere in their body. Do they think about the fact that pain is a way for our body to bring to our awareness that there is a problem that can be fixed without any drugs?
My body is hurting, so I go see a doctor, I get a prescription, I pay for all this and then my heart is hurting. It’s a vicious circle when we think about it. And even if sometimes, drugs are necessary, we must think twice about what we are making our body ingest. I talk a more about this in my article 4 Ways Our Body Ingest Energy.
Didn’t you ever tell yourself that your doctor was only treating symptoms and not the cause of your problems? A very wise woman once told me that if my knee was hurting it might be because my relationships were as well. As a matter of fact, she explained the French word to me – knee in French is genoux – and told me that she was writing it JE and NOUS – I and WE. I even went back to her some other time and she had another explanation for the same word, she told me that we could also write it differently, JE NOUE – literally I tie – meaning I tie problems with myself, so my relationship with myself was bad.
In our run for knowledge and always going faster and longer, we want our body to go faster and so we highjack our own body and its own way to function.
Ayurvedic medicine was born in ancient Vedic times, about – 1 000 BC. It is based on a set of Vedas – knowledge in sanskrit-, it is literally a science – or knowledge – of life. This ancient medicine is going to take care of our whole body to lead us to a balance of the being of the person in need.
Freedom from illness depends upon expanding our own awareness, bringing it into balance, and then extending that balance to the body.
According to this science, by taking care of our mind and body, and so our spirit, we attain an inner balance. A balance I talk about in my article about meditation, Stop Running and Listen to Yourself.
Ayurveda assumes that all that is present in nature is also present in ou body. We are made of the different elements, fire represented by ambition, joy of living, air with incessant thoughts for example, water with creativity or even earth by anchoring.
According to the World Health Organization, Ayurveda is known to be a “a traditional medicine including different practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs and health matter, using herbal and/or mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual technical exercises, with the aim of maintaining well-being, as well as treat, diagnose or prevent the disease.”
We’ll talk about this more in a future article but to keep things simple, according to Ayurveda, we can rank ourselves in 3 différent doshas, that are bio-physical energies by which we are all formed.
VATA, refering to air element and space. Vata means “to move” and people in this category like to move particularly.
PITTA, energy of fire and water. Pittas are always in need of transformation and like to sacrifice in their work.
KAPHA, earth and water. Kaphas are stables, and have a tranquility of mind, they are calm and home-loving.
By knowing your type, you will be more inclined to know when and where you are out of balance in your body and mind. Thanks to Ayurveda, we can be taught to choose certain type of food, or even meditation and yoga poses that fits our type and that balance our doshas so we will feel better.
When we feel better, it is more easy to step further into life. I would even say that life give us the tools necessary to go forward by ourselves, by listening to us and let us be guided by our instinct.
For instance, I have a tendency to run everywhere and to overload myself with work, that’s my Vita side. But, if I make sure I eat enough vegetables that are good for grounding and so that I balance my Kapha side, I will feel better and more balanced.
If you want to know your type, I invite you to take the quizz on this website.

Have you ever tried to eat a piece of wood? Or maybe a leaf on the ground or a stone? According to a cook I follow, eating meat might just be the same as eating those.
I used to eat fast-foods every two days or so, I was raised to eat meat at every meal, except for breakfast. And I used to love to eat meat. I come from a Spanish family so you can guess which kind of meat we like to eat, that one that is really fat.
That cook and naturopath who I follow is Irene Grosjean and I think she’s one of the wisest people I’ve heard talking about food in the past decade. Actually, since I heard her talking on a video on YouTube called “La Vie en Abondance” – Life in Abundance – my way of seeing food has totally changed.
And I must say that since the pandemic happened, we should all start to take responsibility for the part we all have to take in the wellness of the world. Don’t you think the planet has been calling out to us? We all can take a little step towards more awareness considering what is good or bad for it.
More and more people seem to decide to stop eating meat. Why so? There are different views on the subject, some people might stop for environmental reason, others ones could lessen their consumption because of health issues ; some even take that step just to live better.
1 – The planet has tried to tell us to eat less meat
Not enough people realise it yet but when we talk about climate change this isn’t only about our cars, planes and private consumption of gas.
The fact that a majority of people eat meat make some other people want to product a lot to sell more and have loads of money. And when you produce a lot of meat, you produce too much greenhouse gas only by feeding the animals, so just imagine what it takes to medicate them, to make them drink, or just to let them live outdoors – for the least that can.
The production of meat leads to the pollution of our oceans. Do you really think that nitrogen, phosphorus, antibiotics and pesticides are good for our water, aquatic or even human life? I’ve never heard anyone tell me that we should eat those everyday in order to be healthy.
More than 25 billion animals are killed by the meat industry each year. Every second, one football field of rainforest is destroyed in order to produce 257 hamburgers.
Do you realise that 70% of all agricultural land is used for rearing farmed animals? Don’t you find that crazy? I’m not saying that we should all stop eating meat but if we could all lessen our consumption, it would do a lot of good to the planet, I’m sure of it.
I’ll come back another day on this point, but you can still go to this website if you’re interested.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
2 – My body needs healthy food
As I said earlier on my article 4 Different Ways Our Body Ingest Energy, we’re not supposed to eat chemicals. When an animal you’re eating has had antibiotics for its entire life, be sure to eat them at the same time.
It is easy to lecture someone who has decided to become vegetarian/vegan and tell them that we have to eat meat for our own good. But have you ever consider the fact that you are eating meat only because you were taught to? What if that was just a matter of tradition?
As a matter of fact, as Irene Grosjean says it in La Vie en Abondance -with English subtitles-, our body can’t make life happen by eating dead things. If we must eat meat, we therefore have to have a body that can digest it. However, we do not have a carnivorous digestive system but an herbivorous one. Our intestines are long and could even be ones of a frugivore.
We are indeed eating corpses. When I realised what Irene was saying, it hit me. Of course you can argue that you won’t find all the nutriments you need in a plant-based diet ; are you really sure? I’ve heard that B12 vitamin for instance is only found in red meat. Guess what, I get mine in malted yeast, which by the way also replaces cheese since it has the same smell and taste. What about the proteins? Look for red beans, chickpeas, lentils.
I have a friend who’s been sick and that is feeling better and has less medications to take thanks to her plant-based diet ; she hasn’t eaten any animal product for 12 years. I’m far behind and I’ve stopped eating meat for 2 years now. We are both incredibly healthy!
“Deprived of veterinary care, exercise, sunlight, and even the feel of grass beneath their feet, these living, breathing, thinking, feeling beings, whose senses are so much like our own, suffer and die at the rate of millions per day just so that we can have burgers, patties, nuggets, and wieners. Deciding what we will eat means choosing between the horrors of factory farming and respect for animals.”
Some people, like myself, have to stop eating meat for health issues. I know I get really really sick if I come to eat something made with cow milk, which narrows down what I can eat and subsequently led me to stop eating meat, because I realised that it is far from good for us. My physiologist advised me to stop eating meat because I had back problems and guess what? They’ve disappeared now..
When you start becoming a vegetarian, you start by looking at all the label of the things you used to buy and realise that there is meat – or lactose for people with my case – everywhere, even in candies. And then you think about all the animals that must have died to produce that food.
We see in this article that the vegetarian diet is better for us, no matter your health issue and even if you don’t have one.
“A plant-based vegetarian diet is healthier and can prevent diseases. According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians have a reduced risk of heart disease, obesity, colon cancer, adult-onset diabetes, osteoporosis, gout, gallstones, kidney stones, lung cancer, and breast cancer. A low fat vegetarian diet, combined with regular exercise, helps reduce blood pressure and can control, or even eliminate, non-insulin dependent diabetes.”
May your food be your medicine
3 – I am curious
It might be a shock for some people but eating vegetarian helped me to discover new kinds of food and I’m not eating the same things everyday, not at all.
The start is difficult, like anything else, because you need to know and look for some recipes. But as soon as you do, you start getting what you need and have everything in your house. You do have to cook – in the same way as meat – but trust me, it’s really good.
You don’t know what to do? Start cooking some vegetables, add rice, let simmer for a minute or two, water that, add some spices that you like and you get a home-made “paella”.
You like to have a kebab or something fat? Trust me, you can have that as well. And I’m deploring the fact that we don’t have a lot of vegan option in France because in the US they do.
But it is still important to eat well. It’s not because you’re going vegetarian that you can eat whatever you want because you’re just eating vegetables. Eating pizzas and veggie burgers everyday is still considered not eating well. But eating vegetables is a good start towards a healthier life.
The fact is that there is enough food in the world for everyone. But tragically, much of the world’s food and land resources are tied-up in producing beef and livestock-food for the well-off, while millions of children and adults suffer from malnutrition and starvation.

Have you ever felt the need to be alone? Did you ever feel the need to step back and take time by yourself in nature?
I knew about someone who was one of those people who needed to please its friends and family to feel accepted. I saw that he was completely forgetting himself just because he thought that he needed to do as many things as possible to finally be accepted by someone and therefore to be whole.
Maybe if by then I had known about what was a silent retreat, I could have had told him about it and it would have been a life saver for him. Because after all those empty attempts he never found anyone that had the same convictions and therefore he felt rejected and even rejected himself from his country..
Maybe you too are feeling overwhelmed by some people or just maybe by social medias. Maybe you also need to step back from the news and the situation happening in the world with the virus. And I know that it is overwhelming, you can get easily anxious with the situation and that’s partly why I decided to experience this silent retreat.
Hridaya Yoga, a mediation – yoga school based in France organised a 3 and 10 day silent meditation retreat – in French and English. The rules were simple, we had to be alone for the duration of the retreat and we couldn’t do anything more than what the program was offering. Except eating of course and writing on a journal ; no music, no reading, no talking.
Thanks to the quarantine – if I can say it like that – Hridaya Yoga organised this online silent retreat based on a conscious donation. Anyone who was interested could join and take part in all the courses offered. We were guided through four hours of meditation, two hours of yoga and three hours of teachings each days from 8 am to 9 pm.
Of course if you’ve read my articles, you know that I’m familiar with mediation but I was never bold enough – because it takes courage – to meditate for one full hour. My girlfriend joined the French group and I joined the English one. The French group was guided by Deborah Blin and the English group was guided by the founder of the school, Sahajananda.
Sahajananda stayed in silence for 17 years. Yes, you heard well, 17 years. And when you follow his mediations, it’s wonderful to see how, even through a camera, his peace can touch you. All the teachings given in this school are the product of 17 years of silence.
I’m not going to lie, staying in silence for 3 days was really hard, especially when you know that I planned to do the 10 day retreat. But this is also part of the process, yes, all in good time.
Moreover, as I said I was doing it with my girlfriend, but in a little flat so we had to organise our three days in order for us to not even see or eat with each other. We weren’t even supposed to sleep next to each other, we couldn’t do that so we agreed that we wouldn’t look nor touch. It might seem harsh but since we wanted to have the full experience, we had to play along.
The first day was the harder one, my mind even tried to spoil me by checking my bank account. This too could wait. It is difficult to talk about an experience like this since everything is happening in your mind and especially in your heart. My girlfriend explains her experience here :
“I apprehended a lot before the retreat because of all the things we couldn’t do, like not interact with anyone and especially not having any information coming in or out if I can say it like that, no books, no tv… But despite those apprehensions, it made me feel a lot better, like an introspection, something I wasn’t used to do. It did lift things to the surface of my being but it help me sort things out and soothed me. It was like an exploration of the self. »
As for myself, I know that there is a Ben before the retreat and a Ben after ; it’s a crazy experience and we don’t realise how our mind are busy and how we really have to calm them. Now I’m taking things less seriously and I’m learning to listen to myself even more. Since then, my meditations and yoga sessions are a lot more easier and I go through life more serenely. The retreat wasn’t easy at first but we do have to fall before flying.
I advise you to look for a retreat like this. Another one I heard about is Vipassana. But I’m sure you can find one of your own that suit you best and that you can benefit from. Life can be scary sometimes but remember those moments where you stepped out of your comfort zone, wasn’t it worth it? The fledgling is scared as well when it has to leave the nest and fly but when it does fly, it is finally free.
