Tips For Learning a Language

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2 : Conseils Pour Apprendre une Langue

3 min read

Learning a language takes time, you have to learn everything by heart so you don’t forget anything, it’s not fun …

FALSE

Learning a language might be a great journey you can enjoy. It can be fun and you don’t necessarily have to spend all your time learning everything by heart.

In fact, if you know how to do it, you can learn without even feeling like you are.

I actually learnt English by myself. Well, I had all the teachings from school obviously but that wasn’t enough for me to really speak the language. Today, I have the CAE -Cambridge Advanced English – which says that I have a C1 English level.

I didn’t live in an English country, I didn’t take spare classes to learn it, my accent is not the best one and I can sometimes do some mistakes I know. But still, I’ve been writing articles in English AND French since January now and I think you guys can get what I write.

I really appreciate all who’ve been liking and commenting on my articles. Thank you, really much.

I learnt English simply because I chose to. I come from a Spanish family and I used to speak English with my grandmother – may she rests in peace – so maybe I was used to being comfortable with languages.

When I was living in Paris, I decided that I needed to learn English in order that I would be able to travel easily. And since I didn’t have enough money to go live in an English country, I decided to bring English to me. I started to watch movies in English, turn the language of my phone and computer into English, tried to read English books and so on… I even tried to think in English.

Imagine when I had my first dream in English, it was an apotheosis for me!

And today I try to give that taste of freedom to anyone I can. Because learning English opened many doors for me. Truly. Now I can learn about a subject in two – sometimes three with Spanish – different languages and this is really helping me to go deeper into my researches and I can write even better articles.

You might not understand the necessity you have to learn a new language, but it can absolutely help you grow stronger in your business as well as in your personal life.

Knowing different languages is like having multiple souls. Teaching languages is actually one of my specialities.

I also had the chance to spend time with English speaking people in Paris, which helped so much in my learning. For them, for my grandmother, for the time I spent learning … thank you.

Today I’d like to give you a little tip if you want to learn a language. If you really want to, it is something you won’t be spending a lot of time on. You just need to have a directory with you at all times.

It’s an easy tip, that everyone can do and that can teach you a lot of words, that you will remember just by yourself, for the price of a directory – 2$.

Throughout your day, make the effort to listen to podcasts, radio shows, news, read articles or books or even watch movies or tv programs in the language you want to learn. You might start with adding the subtitles of your language, then you will want to replace them by the language you’re learning – which will help you see the words you hear – and then you won’t even need to have subtitles.

By doing that, you will learn new words everyday and as soon as you learn a new word, write it in your directory, choose a colour for your language and another one for the new one. This might be blue for English and red for French for example if you want to learn French.

You will see that the more you do that, the more you will learn words and the more you will want to learn. It’s fun and you will want to continue working on that. Many times, our brain doesn’t have to be forced to do something, if we do it just out of fun, we remember it and that makes us want to learn even more.

For those who follow me, please excuse me for not being here for the past week, I had some issues to work on. Fortunately they are solved now and I can write again.

As a matter of fact, I will be coming with new ideas and the website will soon be updated to offer you a lot more tools!

To be continued …

In the meantime, be well and enjoy being alive.

Love,

Ben

Ancient Science

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2 : Science Antique

3 min read

In the continuity of my article Why I Stopped Eating Corpses, let’s now talk about a parallel subject, Ayurveda.

Do you also feel the need for more simplicity? New methods for “eating better” and “feeling better” are beyond you?

Ayurveda is a science sister to yoga – my article about Yoga as a Path to Transformation is also available – that wants to equilibrate our mind and body so we can live in harmony with our mental, physical and emotional health.

A lot of people are used to running to the doctor once they are hurting somewhere in their body. Do they think about the fact that pain is a way for our body to bring to our awareness that there is a problem that can be fixed without any drugs?

My body is hurting, so I go see a doctor, I get a prescription, I pay for all this and then my heart is hurting. It’s a vicious circle when we think about it. And even if sometimes, drugs are necessary, we must think twice about what we are making our body ingest. I talk a more about this in my article 4 Ways Our Body Ingest Energy.

Didn’t you ever tell yourself that your doctor was only treating symptoms and not the cause of your problems? A very wise woman once told me that if my knee was hurting it might be because my relationships were as well. As a matter of fact, she explained the French word to me – knee in French is genoux – and told me that she was writing it JE and NOUS – I and WE. I even went back to her some other time and she had another explanation for the same word, she told me that we could also write it differently, JE NOUE – literally I tie – meaning I tie problems with myself, so my relationship with myself was bad.

In our run for knowledge and always going faster and longer, we want our body to go faster and so we highjack our own body and its own way to function.

Ayurvedic medicine was born in ancient Vedic times, about – 1 000 BC. It is based on a set of Vedas – knowledge in sanskrit-, it is literally a science – or knowledgeof life. This ancient medicine is going to take care of our whole body to lead us to a balance of the being of the person in need.

Freedom from illness depends upon expanding our own awareness, bringing it into balance, and then extending that balance to the body.

Deepak Chopra

According to this science, by taking care of our mind and body, and so our spirit, we attain an inner balance. A balance I talk about in my article about meditation, Stop Running and Listen to Yourself.

Ayurveda assumes that all that is present in nature is also present in ou body. We are made of the different elements, fire represented by ambition, joy of living, air with incessant thoughts for example, water with creativity or even earth by anchoring.

According to the World Health Organization, Ayurveda is known to be a “a traditional medicine including different practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs and health matter, using herbal and/or mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual technical exercises, with the aim of maintaining well-being, as well as treat, diagnose or prevent the disease.”

We’ll talk about this more in a future article but to keep things simple, according to Ayurveda, we can rank ourselves in 3 différent doshas, that are bio-physical energies by which we are all formed.

VATA, refering to air element and space. Vata means “to move” and people in this category like to move particularly.

PITTA, energy of fire and water. Pittas are always in need of transformation and like to sacrifice in their work.

KAPHA, earth and water. Kaphas are stables, and have a tranquility of mind, they are calm and home-loving.

By knowing your type, you will be more inclined to know when and where you are out of balance in your body and mind. Thanks to Ayurveda, we can be taught to choose certain type of food, or even meditation and yoga poses that fits our type and that balance our doshas so we will feel better.

When we feel better, it is more easy to step further into life. I would even say that life give us the tools necessary to go forward by ourselves, by listening to us and let us be guided by our instinct.

For instance, I have a tendency to run everywhere and to overload myself with work, that’s my Vita side. But, if I make sure I eat enough vegetables that are good for grounding and so that I balance my Kapha side, I will feel better and more balanced.

If you want to know your type, I invite you to take the quizz on this website.

Lunar Eclipse

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2 : Éclipse Lunaire

2 min read

This year is punctuated by no less than 6 eclipses visible from the planet. 4 lunar eclipses and 2 solar eclipses. While one of the lunar eclipses happened last January, I had to write an article about the next one happening on June 5th.

Eclipses happen only when there is a full or new moon and can be more or less strong depending on the alignement of the sun, moon and earth.

The next lunar eclipse will be what we call a penumbral eclipse, that means that the three celestial bodies won’t be precisely aligned, the moon will be in the shadow of the earth.

We’ll go deeper in the subject in a future article, but in my opinion, the moon is underestimated and unknown. If we think about it, studies have already shown that the moon influences the tides and therefore the water of our oceans. And what are our bodies composed of? About 65% of water on average. Therefore, it is natural to think that the moon is going to influence our body, and not only our mood as some joke about this.

Eclipses affects us, precisely because they happen during new and full moon. It is said that during those periods of time, humans can use the cycles of the moon to do basic things like cut hair or less basic things like see their wishes realised.

For the next solar eclipse, don’t wait for something spectacular like you would on a solar eclipse lunar you’ll be able to see the eclipse during (the picture below shows from where we can see it) during at least 3 hours. The June 5th lunar eclipse will be at its peak at 7:29 PM.

That said, we also will be able to witness the solar eclipse on June 21th if we’re in Asia, Africa or South-East Europe.

If you liked this article, please share it on your social medias platform.

You can also subscribe to the newsletter every week with a new article, next one will be on the ancient medicine that is Ayruveda.

Until then, take care.

Why I Stopped Eating Corpses

Cliquez ici pour le français : Pourquoi J’ai Arrêté de Manger des Cadavres

4 min read

Have you ever tried to eat a piece of wood? Or maybe a leaf on the ground or a stone? According to a cook I follow, eating meat might just be the same as eating those.

I used to eat fast-foods every two days or so, I was raised to eat meat at every meal, except for breakfast. And I used to love to eat meat. I come from a Spanish family so you can guess which kind of meat we like to eat, that one that is really fat.

That cook and naturopath who I follow is Irene Grosjean and I think she’s one of the wisest people I’ve heard talking about food in the past decade. Actually, since I heard her talking on a video on YouTube called “La Vie en Abondance” – Life in Abundance – my way of seeing food has totally changed.

And I must say that since the pandemic happened, we should all start to take responsibility for the part we all have to take in the wellness of the world. Don’t you think the planet has been calling out to us? We all can take a little step towards more awareness considering what is good or bad for it.

More and more people seem to decide to stop eating meat. Why so? There are different views on the subject, some people might stop for environmental reason, others ones could lessen their consumption because of health issues ; some even take that step just to live better.

1 – The planet has tried to tell us to eat less meat

Not enough people realise it yet but when we talk about climate change this isn’t only about our cars, planes and private consumption of gas.

The fact that a majority of people eat meat make some other people want to product a lot to sell more and have loads of money. And when you produce a lot of meat, you produce too much greenhouse gas only by feeding the animals, so just imagine what it takes to medicate them, to make them drink, or just to let them live outdoors – for the least that can.

The production of meat leads to the pollution of our oceans. Do you really think that nitrogen, phosphorus, antibiotics and pesticides are good for our water, aquatic or even human life? I’ve never heard anyone tell me that we should eat those everyday in order to be healthy.

More than 25 billion animals are killed by the meat industry each year. Every second, one football field of rainforest is destroyed in order to produce 257 hamburgers.

Do you realise that 70% of all agricultural land is used for rearing farmed animals? Don’t you find that crazy? I’m not saying that we should all stop eating meat but if we could all lessen our consumption, it would do a lot of good to the planet, I’m sure of it.

We live in a consumer society and the more we eat meat, the more we contribute to it. We have meat in every meal. I has become an illness for us. Actually I’m working on a film project that criticise our consumer society, you can see it on my article Docu-Project :The Internal Change Happening Within and Outside of Us.

I’ll come back another day on this point, but you can still go to this website if you’re interested.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

Gandhi

2 – My body needs healthy food

As I said earlier on my article 4 Different Ways Our Body Ingest Energy, we’re not supposed to eat chemicals. When an animal you’re eating has had antibiotics for its entire life, be sure to eat them at the same time.

It is easy to lecture someone who has decided to become vegetarian/vegan and tell them that we have to eat meat for our own good. But have you ever consider the fact that you are eating meat only because you were taught to? What if that was just a matter of tradition?

As a matter of fact, as Irene Grosjean says it in La Vie en Abondance -with English subtitles-, our body can’t make life happen by eating dead things. If we must eat meat, we therefore have to have a body that can digest it. However, we do not have a carnivorous digestive system but an herbivorous one. Our intestines are long and could even be ones of a frugivore.

We are indeed eating corpses. When I realised what Irene was saying, it hit me. Of course you can argue that you won’t find all the nutriments you need in a plant-based diet ; are you really sure? I’ve heard that B12 vitamin for instance is only found in red meat. Guess what, I get mine in malted yeast, which by the way also replaces cheese since it has the same smell and taste. What about the proteins? Look for red beans, chickpeas, lentils.

I have a friend who’s been sick and that is feeling better and has less medications to take thanks to her plant-based diet ; she hasn’t eaten any animal product for 12 years. I’m far behind and I’ve stopped eating meat for 2 years now. We are both incredibly healthy!

This website put it in another way :

“Deprived of veterinary care, exercise, sunlight, and even the feel of grass beneath their feet, these living, breathing, thinking, feeling beings, whose senses are so much like our own, suffer and die at the rate of millions per day just so that we can have burgers, patties, nuggets, and wieners. Deciding what we will eat means choosing between the horrors of factory farming and respect for animals.”

Some people, like myself, have to stop eating meat for health issues. I know I get really really sick if I come to eat something made with cow milk, which narrows down what I can eat and subsequently led me to stop eating meat, because I realised that it is far from good for us. My physiologist advised me to stop eating meat because I had back problems and guess what? They’ve disappeared now..

When you start becoming a vegetarian, you start by looking at all the label of the things you used to buy and realise that there is meat – or lactose for people with my case – everywhere, even in candies. And then you think about all the animals that must have died to produce that food.

We see in this article that the vegetarian diet is better for us, no matter your health issue and even if you don’t have one.

“A plant-based vegetarian diet is healthier and can prevent diseases. According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians have a reduced risk of heart disease, obesity, colon cancer, adult-onset diabetes, osteoporosis, gout, gallstones, kidney stones, lung cancer, and breast cancer. A low fat vegetarian diet, combined with regular exercise, helps reduce blood pressure and can control, or even eliminate, non-insulin dependent diabetes.”

May your food be your medicine

Hippocrate

3 – I am curious

It might be a shock for some people but eating vegetarian helped me to discover new kinds of food and I’m not eating the same things everyday, not at all.

The start is difficult, like anything else, because you need to know and look for some recipes. But as soon as you do, you start getting what you need and have everything in your house. You do have to cook – in the same way as meat – but trust me, it’s really good.

You don’t know what to do? Start cooking some vegetables, add rice, let simmer for a minute or two, water that, add some spices that you like and you get a home-made “paella”.

You like to have a kebab or something fat? Trust me, you can have that as well. And I’m deploring the fact that we don’t have a lot of vegan option in France because in the US they do.

But it is still important to eat well. It’s not because you’re going vegetarian that you can eat whatever you want because you’re just eating vegetables. Eating pizzas and veggie burgers everyday is still considered not eating well. But eating vegetables is a good start towards a healthier life.

The fact is that there is enough food in the world for everyone. But tragically, much of the world’s food and land resources are tied-up in producing beef and livestock-food for the well-off, while millions of children and adults suffer from malnutrition and starvation.

Silent Retreat

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2

3 min read

Have you ever felt the need to be alone? Did you ever feel the need to step back and take time by yourself in nature?

I knew about someone who was one of those people who needed to please its friends and family to feel accepted. I saw that he was completely forgetting himself just because he thought that he needed to do as many things as possible to finally be accepted by someone and therefore to be whole.

Maybe if by then I had known about what was a silent retreat, I could have had told him about it and it would have been a life saver for him. Because after all those empty attempts he never found anyone that had the same convictions and therefore he felt rejected and even rejected himself from his country..

Maybe you too are feeling overwhelmed by some people or just maybe by social medias. Maybe you also need to step back from the news and the situation happening in the world with the virus. And I know that it is overwhelming, you can get easily anxious with the situation and that’s partly why I decided to experience this silent retreat.

Hridaya Yoga, a mediation – yoga school based in France organised a 3 and 10 day silent meditation retreat – in French and English. The rules were simple, we had to be alone for the duration of the retreat and we couldn’t do anything more than what the program was offering. Except eating of course and writing on a journal ; no music, no reading, no talking.

Thanks to the quarantine – if I can say it like that – Hridaya Yoga organised this online silent retreat based on a conscious donation. Anyone who was interested could join and take part in all the courses offered. We were guided through four hours of meditation, two hours of yoga and three hours of teachings each days from 8 am to 9 pm.

Of course if you’ve read my articles, you know that I’m familiar with mediation but I was never bold enough – because it takes courage – to meditate for one full hour. My girlfriend joined the French group and I joined the English one. The French group was guided by Deborah Blin and the English group was guided by the founder of the school, Sahajananda.

Sahajananda stayed in silence for 17 years. Yes, you heard well, 17 years. And when you follow his mediations, it’s wonderful to see how, even through a camera, his peace can touch you. All the teachings given in this school are the product of 17 years of silence.

I’m not going to lie, staying in silence for 3 days was really hard, especially when you know that I planned to do the 10 day retreat. But this is also part of the process, yes, all in good time

Moreover, as I said I was doing it with my girlfriend, but in a little flat so we had to organise our three days in order for us to not even see or eat with each other. We weren’t even supposed to sleep next to each other, we couldn’t do that so we agreed that we wouldn’t look nor touch. It might seem harsh but since we wanted to have the full experience, we had to play along.

The first day was the harder one, my mind even tried to spoil me by checking my bank account. This too could wait. It is difficult to talk about an experience like this since everything is happening in your mind and especially in your heart. My girlfriend explains her experience here :

“I apprehended a lot before the retreat because of all the things we couldn’t do, like not interact with anyone and especially not having any information coming in or out if I can say it like that, no books, no tv… But despite those apprehensions, it made me feel a lot better, like an introspection, something I wasn’t used to do. It did lift things to the surface of my being but it help me sort things out and soothed me. It was like an exploration of the self. »

As for myself, I know that there is a Ben before the retreat and a Ben after ; it’s a crazy experience and we don’t realise how our mind are busy and how we really have to calm them. Now I’m taking things less seriously and I’m learning to listen to myself even more. Since then, my meditations and yoga sessions are a lot more easier and I go through life more serenely. The retreat wasn’t easy at first but we do have to fall before flying.

I advise you to look for a retreat like this. Another one I heard about is Vipassana. But I’m sure you can find one of your own that suit you best and that you can benefit from. Life can be scary sometimes but remember those moments where you stepped out of your comfort zone, wasn’t it worth it? The fledgling is scared as well when it has to leave the nest and fly but when it does fly, it is finally free.

I hope you liked this article. If you did, do not hesitate to type your address email below to receive an email once a week with a new article. And I would really appreciate a like or share on any social media, you’ll find my links bellow.

Stay safe and take care.

4 Different Ways Our Body Ingest Energy

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2

5 min read

Of course you know how much it is important to watch what comes into your mouth. Everybody knows that eating fast-food everyday is bad and that we need particularly a certain amount of oligo elements to go out through our days. But more than that, we are influenced by anything that comes in contact with us, not only about the food we eat but also the things we watch or listen to. Look at how it feels to be outside those days, you start to feel anxious when you have to leave home even if you’re not used to feeling like everyone else.

Didn’t you know that as soon as your body – or being – comes into contact with something – anything – , it starts to mirror it a little more ? That something you were watching or listening ; or even that person you’ve spent time with is making you look a little more like them. It’s just as if that something or someone was glowing power into you so as so you would become a little more of them?

We are what we eat.

You might have heard that saying so many times. But it doesn’t keep away the fact that it is true. And we are going to uncover it more today. It is true in at least 4 different ways : (1) I eat what (2) I watch in order to (3) listen to what (4) I feel.

<p class="has-primary-background-color has-background" value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80"><strong>1 – In order to be healthy you need to eat good food</strong>1 – In order to be healthy you need to eat good food

<p value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80">That one is the most understood I think. But did you know why? But did you know why? A study about the Health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries, 1990–2017  reveals that “findings show that suboptimal diet is responsible for more deaths than any other risks globally, including tobacco smoking”.

<p value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80">If I should say one thing about this, try to eat as much as fruits and vegetables as you can, and choose as much organic foods as you can. Just because they’re better for you than foods soaked in pesticides. They’re more expensive, that is true, but sometimes you just have to put more money in order to be well and live at the fullest of your capacities. Even the plastic wrapping some of your foods can be harmful to you.If I should say one thing about this, try to eat as much as fruits and vegetables as you can, and choose as much organic foods as you can. Just because they’re better for you than foods soaked in pesticides. They’re more expensive, that is true, but sometimes you just have to put more money in order to be well and live at the fullest of your capacities. Even the plastic wrapping some of your foods can be harmful to you.

It’s the same for GMOs, if you just take time to look at what you put into your mouth, you might realise that some labels specify that what you are eating is bad and is created artificially – thankfully the law still says that companies have to be transparent. It’s exactly what it is, we eat things created from chemical products, therefore something artificial. How can we think that it could be at least good for us? It’s proven that pesticides change our DNA! Look for those label showing something that you don’t know, there’s a chance it’s just because it doesn’t exist. Such as E385, E200, soy lecithin and so on.

The US NEWS tells more : “Paying attention to what you eat isn’t only about controlling weight; the need for certain vitamins and minerals increases with age. One is calcium, necessary to protect bones. Another is B12, since some older adults make less of the stomach acid required to absorb the vitamin. More vitamin D also is required. « The skin gets less efficient at converting sunlight into this vitamin, so more is needed from other sources, » Lichtenstein says. Fewer than 7 percent of Americans between ages 50 and 70 get enough vitamin D from the foods they eat, and fewer than 26 percent get enough calcium.”

And this meat you’re eating everyday also contains drugs that the animal took… I’m just saying it’s really important to know where your food comes from.

<p value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80">And for the ones who smoke, some might even say that the plant you smoke even take control of your own body. You’re not the same when you do smoke. And believe me when I say this. I stopped smoking recently and I realised what it took from me. Stopping actually brought me back to my “real self”, or at least it gave me back my energy and fuel for life I so much needed. But since I was smoking cigarettes every day I didn’t even realise it since it was always the case. And for the ones who smoke, some might even say that the plant you smoke even take control of your own body.

It’s the same for the things you eat or anything you drink, sometimes we don’t even realise how bad it can hurt us because we ingest it everyday and we don’t know how we are feeling when we’re out of it. Choosing good food is a way to showing your body that you worth more than cheap.

I could go on and on about this but we’ll come back later with an article about Ayurveda and about how and why I became vegetarian.

What can we remember about all this today? This article might give us an idea :“Rich in vegetables, fruit, cereals, nuts, regular ‘splash’ of olive oil, and occasional glass of wine, the Mediterranean diet has multiple beneficial health effects, such as decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive disorders. The effect seemed to be clear-cut in Mediterranean populations, but it wasn’t so consistent for the non-Mediterranean regions, probably because of the use of different Mediterranean diet scores.”

2 – What we watch is digested in the same way as food

You know how Facebook is taking time out of you. We are in quarantine so we’re all more on our screens but don’t you realise that all the notifications you’re getting are made to take time out of you? I know you do. They actually want you to spend more time on your phone so you’re able to see their adds and so they get your money. Again, it’s all about money.

Furthermore, as I told you in my article about the benefits of coronavirus, we need to concentrate on the good things happening around us and I don’t think concentrating on the news every single day won’t help us to feel good. And if one doesn’t feel good, one is not happy.

As a matter of fact, mainstream medias don’t always tell the truth, they are known for arranging the truth. Especially right now, where it’s easy to feel overwhelmed ; they shouldn’t lie to us but they do. We heard in France that all the hospitals were full and that it was hard. I get that it is hard but then I hear from one of my friend who is working as a nurse in hospitals in the south of France that there hospitals are not full at all and even that some nurses need to take vacation because they’re too much people working…

“Repeat a lie strong enough and long enough and people will believe it.” Adolf Hitler

I won’t go into asking why they do that but it’s still interesting to realise it. When we watch the news, we are soaking up the fear that they want to give us. We should therefore be aware of what we watch as much as what we listen.

Watching is the same as playing. Many years ago not far from my hometown, we all heard about that teenager who killed his parents after playing too long at video games that were not supposed to be played by someone his age. There’s also children going mad after playing “Slender Man ». A women even killed his 3 month old baby just because he was too much crying while she was playing “Farmville”. I don’t know about you but it’s enough for me to try to not play too long.

Therefore, we can naturally see that what we are watching is ingested by our body and has an effect on our wellbeing. Of course change doesn’t happen overnight but by becoming aware and conscious of the situation, we all can start to change our habits into good ones.

3 – You soak up what you listen to

We all had that experience where music just changed our mood. We listened to that one music we liked because we were just feeling down and wanting some alone time. That music sheered us up and made us rock the end of the day. I know I love to play a mantra in the morning (read my article about mantras here if you didn’t already) to wake up gently and then I put some loud music to start my day energised.

Listening to a podcast might be a good thing to do as well. I also talked about this in my article about what to do during lock down, you can read it here.

Moreover, we all experienced a lie that affected us. My sister for instance, she still remembers me saying that we were on our mother’s womb at the same, except we’re 10 years apart… Joke aside, it’s the same for secrets, they might be hard to keep or even bear and it can affect our wellbeing and even the way we think.

For instance I will always remember those pictures or clips I watched and heard when I was a teenager and decided to do like the others and watch what everyone was watching. Even though you knew you shouldn’t have had watched it, you did and it became part of your life for quite some time.

It is the same for the radio shows you used to listen to. Why don’t the good things tend to stick to ourselves more than the bad things? It is much easier for something bad to get remembered later. It is how life works and how we are made to function. Our brain follows patterns he knows. In meditation, we learn the cycles of life. Which are “Action – Desire – Memory”. Even if we think we have a free will, most of the time we are following the same patterns over and over. And that’s not just me saying it, scientists too. If we want to think about good memories, we first need to concentrate on creating good action so our desires change and we keep living in an energy of love more than an energy of fear. For this, believe me when I say that mediation is going to help you come across those different feelings, you can read my article about meditation, Stop Running and Listen to Yourself.

4 – I feel good

My feelings start to go up as long as I keep doing what is making me feel good. The more I eat things that are good for me, the more that I watch interesting things and the more I listen to things that uplift me, the more I will feel happy.

Let’s take a look at Hawkins Scale of Consciousness. It tell us that in order to live Enlightenment, we need to be « logged » in the higher ranks of the scale. If I’m showing off and therefore live Pride, I’m feeling Scorn and I vibrate at 175 on the scale, and we also get the emotion to help us recognise where we are, here is Demanding. Hawkins is a psychologist and Nobel Price, his worldly estimate of humanity’s evolution is « courage ».

I find this scale really interesting. If we transpose what I’m saying into it, we see that if I watch something frightening, I get feelings of anxiety and therefore live at only 20 on the scale of consciousness. I told you in previous articles that life is made of vibration and that we all vibrate something. That scale represents the energy we are vibrating and therefore attracting to us.

Don’t we all want to live at the highest of our potential and attract good things to us? We therefore should try to vibrate at a certain energy, at least control the most of it that we can. What we can control is what we eat, what we watch and what we listen to.

I know that it is easier said than done ; don’t worry, everything take time and change doesn’t happen overnight. Be gentle with yourself and start being aware of your life.

Ravioles Voyageuses

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2

2 min read

As I was asked in comments, here’s my recipe of the Traveller Ravioles. Why traveller? Because the raviole is composed of Mediterranean product and the sauce remind of Asia!

This recipe is fun and easy to do for anyone. I’m not a cook, I simple try with the product that I have and I use the time lock down has given me. With patience and love, the recipe makes itself.

Little precision, those ravioles are vegetarian. You can add meat if you want but they don’t really need it.

Only bad thing on the recipe is that I advise you to have a rolling mill for the ravioles dough. I tried with a rolling pin and believe me I had to work for almost an hour to be able to use the dough.

Last detail, this recipe is thought to be served for 4 people. Once again, this is not my job so the recipe needs to be read before you do it so you know where you go.

First step : Ravioles dough

We’ll need :

  • 300 g flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Some spinach
  • Some basil

Mix all the ingredients until you get a dough. On a floury table, knead the dough until you get a ball. Don’t hesitate to add water if it doesn’t stick enough of flour it it sticks too much to you hand. For me, cooking is a matter of feeling. You have the dough in your hand, so you know what to do.

When the ball is formed, let sit in the fridge for about an hour.

Once it has rested, the dough can be mixed with the spinach. On a floury table, start spreading the dough incorporating basil and spinach. Once this is done, you can put your dough in the rolling mill.

Now you have to be creative and choose how you want your ravioles to be. I chose to cut them with a glass so they would be round.

Second step : ravioles stuffing

We’ll need :

  • 1 big sweet potato
  • 1 big eggplant
  • 1 big onion
  • 2 garlic clove
  • 2 rosemary branch
  • 2 thym branch
  • 1 handfuls of parsley
  • 1 coffee spoon of concentrated tomato
  • 20 cl soy cream
  • Spices (curry, ginger, haz el hanout, depending on your taste)
  • Soy sauce
  • Salt, pepper

One small important precision, every « trash » that the vegetables, condiments or other will give you, keep them and put them in a casserole with water, leave to reduce.

Cook the sweet potato and eggplant cut half and salted in the oven for about 30 minutes, until they’re golden.

Until then, prepare a bowl with hot water, a little olive oil and let the concentrated tomato melt.

Cut the onion, let it cook with the herbs and the garlic in a big casserole. Let simmer until you get a sweet coloration and add the water and concentrated tomato.

When water has evaporated, add some water and soy sauce and turn down the heat. At this step, you should be able to take the flesh of the sweet potato and eggplant (don’t gorget to keep the peels and put them in the casserole for it). Continue to mow and reduce until you can mix them of with a robot so you get a smooth stuffing for your raviole.

Third step : sauce

Ingredients :

  • Leftovers from all the food I used in previous operations
  • Soy sauce
  • Salt, pepper
  • Spices as you like
  • 4 green asparagus

We see it in cooking show, a good meal isn’t one without a good sauce. That is why I decided to make a sauce for my ravioles. And to stay in a sustainable approach, I decided to use all the leftovers. Believe me, it’s a real treat.

You always have to taste! And then just have to change what you like or don’t like like. The you let it reduce when you do your stuffing. Add water if you need but not too much, you want to have a smooth texture and clear. Once it is reduced and tasted, use a skimmer to pick up the sauce and leave the rest.

In the same time and for the dressing, take your asparagus and keep the heads. Cut the rest into rounds. Cut the heads in its length and then cook everything until crunchy.

Step four : cooking the ravioles

Now you only have to fill you ravioles. Mine are rounds, so I fill them up, add a little piece of sheep cheese inside for a little surprise and I close them. As you see in the picture, I chose to close them on themselves with a fork. It keeps them from opening when they cook.

Once this is done, I put my ravioles in boiling salted water for about 10 minutes. Be careful, it is not because your raviole come up that they are cooked, wait a little longer than you would have so you basil, spinach and cheese melt enough to give their taste back.

Step five : dressing

Now you just have to take a plate, put some of the stuffing on the bottom and add 3 ravioles. Put some sauce around with some round asparagus. The heads go on top of the plate. For the rest, just be creative!

Step six : Bon appétit!

Hope you like this recipe. Let me know what you think and if you tried it. I might be able to help during the realisation of the ravioles!

Meditation Series : Mantras with Carrie Grossman

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2

4 min read

Welcome back! I hope everyone is feeling great and holding tight during these weird times. Today we are going deeper into the meditation series.

I see a lot of people trying to meditate, trying to be more aware of themselves and what they do or just trying to listen to something that makes them go deeper into relaxation. But they only try, they don’t seem to be able to sit and actually meditate. The thing is, in meditation you don’t even have to do anything to do it. You juste have to Be.

Sometimes I just don’t feel like meditating but still I know it could help me. And trust me, it is during those moments, when you don’t feel like it that mediation is going to be the most beneficial to you. It’s like when you go to the gym, you don’t want to go but you’re glad you did when you come out of the place. And it is something I could also say about yoga. Check out my article about yoga Yoga as a Path to Transformation.

But I know things aren’t always safe and sound, and you have a lot on your mind. This is why we are going to talk about meditative musics, and more specifically about mantras. And today we have the great privilege to welcome Carrie Grossman in the blog. Carrie Grossman is a singer and meditation teacher on the Insight Timer app. You know, the app I told you about in my article about meditation, Stop Running and Listen to Yourself. Carrie has a 10-day course on the app called Awaken the Heart through Chanting and Mantras. A course I advised you to take if you have a profile on the app! Carrie has a really beautiful voice and talks about mantras like I never heard better before, simply, truthfully and from the heart. She is going to be our host today and will be answering some questions I asked her specifically for this article. Carrie will be talking all along this article, when the text is put on italic. You’ll find links to her music and website at the end of this article.

Therefore, when I have trouble being still and keeping my mind steady, I think it helps to put on some music. I like listening to loud music but it is also refreshing to listen to something that talks to your soul. I sometimes like to listen to meditative music when I’m working or just cleaning my place. A YouTube channel I like for that is Meditative Mind. They’re sharing musics like this one. And I also listen to mantras.

For those who don’t know, Carrie Grossman explains what they are : mantras are sacred sound formulas. They are ancient sonic tools that can help to quiet our mind and open our heart. The word mantra comes from two Sanskrit words: “man”, which means “mind” and “tra”, which means “to cross over” or “to protect”. So a mantra is something that helps our mind go beyond thought, and it also helps to protect our mind from itself.

Carrie also specify that mantras were not created by anyone, but it’s said that they exist in nature. The Rishis, or great seers of India, heard the sounds in the depths of their meditations, and they articulated them. Then, these sounds were passed on in an oral tradition for thousands of years. Today, we’re blessed to have access to them.

This subject is really large and it is difficult to talk about it in just one article but basically, I advise you to use mantra in your daily life, or just even during your meditations for a start. It’s only when you tried one and made the effort to feel its vibration that you can truly understand. I asked Carrie the best way to use them and this is her response :

There are many different ways to use mantras. They can be spoken, chanted, sung, whispered, or repeated silently in the mind. One popular mantra practice is known as Kirtan. This is a call-and-response singing practice that can be done in a group. It’s a very joyful way to experience the power of mantras and chanting. This kind of devotional music is widely available by different artists, and it’s a wonderful aid to meditation.

And believe me, she truly has a gift for singing them. I love listening to some of her interpretations and I really think she has a way of demystifying this ancient spiritual technique. You don’t have to be religious to sing them but sometimes it can feel like it and I advise you to go check Carrie’s music. As I said, she has a gift for modernising mantras, I think her way of doing it is more accessible than the traditional way.

Carrie talks about it like a sonic tool. Actually, scientist know that all that is present on earth has a vibration correspondant. We are indeed made of vibration, we can feel it when we are connected to others emotionally, we tend to feel their love, fear, joy, excitement … this all has to do with vibration. We also know that the earth itself has a vibration (we can think of the schumann resonance). You might have heard people chanting “Om” when they meditate or do yoga for instance. This sound is simply the vibration of the crown chakra (the one on top of the head), dedicated to our connection to the universe. Therefore, when I chant “Om” I am re-aligning myself (my chakra) with the universe. It is the same for mantras, as Carrie put it, they are sacred sound formulas, they are a succession of sanskrit words and “magic” sounds. Or as she put it : Everything in this world is made up of vibrations—including our thoughts and emotions. Since mantras are the purest sound vibrations, they can help to shift our vibration and uplift our mind and heart. Mantras can also purify the atmosphere.

So it’s not necessary to chant them, you can just listen to them and their magic will happen anyway. Since they are vibrations, playing them will make the vibration live and do its work on your being, on the planet and on your home.

However, this can be considered as a religious practice because of the repetition of the sounds. It is said, as in other religions as well that one has to chant a mantra / say a prayer enough time for it to make it work. So what happen for people who don’t really believe in that kind of things? The good thing about mantra is that you don’t really have to believe in them, neither do you have to count the number of time you’re chanting them. As a matter of fact, you don’t necessarily even understand what you are saying when you do sing them. Carrie answers this as well :

When chanting or listening to a mantra, it’s not necessary to believe anything—the power lies in the vibration of the sounds. While it can be helpful to have a basic understanding of what the mantras mean, ultimately they’re beyond any conceptual understanding.

Necessary during this times of need, help has to come from many places and I think dedicating some time of our quarantine to help others during this big “war” against the virus should be beneficial and a priority to everyone of us. The more we do it, the more vibrations are working for us and therefore the battle will be won way easily! Carrie also addresses this :

One very important mantra that can be chanted anytime is Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, which means “May all beings everywhere be peaceful and happy.” You can chant this every day, or find a recording to listen to or sing along. This is a beautiful way to send prayers and healing thoughts to all of creation.

Here is Carrie’s song dedicated to this particular mantra. Believe me, you can feel the benefits of the mantra within the first minute.

Here’s another one of her mantras that I love, Ang Sang Wahe Guru. It is a mantra for oneness that means “the lovely energy of the universe vibrates in every cell of my being”. When I first listened to it, I could basically feel my being coming back to itself and in alignment, a very powerful tool. And with Carrie’s voice, it is felt like sweet, trust me.

Of course, you can find many artists singing mantras, here are two of them I chose for you. Bhagavan Das, you can listen to one of his tracks here ; and Craig Pruess, enjoy his music here

We are only talking about thoughts, songs and time dedicated to this. You don’t have to pay anything and you don’t have to do a big ritual to make it work so why not give it a try?

I think this was a lot to take in already. I’ll let you digest everything and we might come back to this subject in the future. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions if you like.

If you want to know more about Carrie’s music, please go check her website. You’ll find out more about her work and her music here : carriegmusic.com. You can also find some of her music on her YouTube channel here.

I hope this article gave you a clear idea of what mantras are and made you want to listen to them – even more.

Killing Time Locking Down

FRANÇAIS PAGE 2

3 min read

I am a little late this week but there is an explanation. Mr President Macron here in France announced on Monday that we would have to stay locked down for another month. Actually I think it’s pretty much the same in every countries but the information we get don’t make sense if you ask me and there is plenty of things to be confused about. We hear one thing and then we hear another, we don’t know who to listen to and it’s pretty frustrating.

So it was difficult to find something to write about. I thought I would share things I’m doing during this lock down and in particular share websites that have been helpful to me. And this should be my last article about the corona virus, because I think we all need to hear something else than what fire our anxiety. Expect if you want me to write more about it.

I know I said that we have to take advantage of this time alone and work into things we didn’t have the opportunity before. And it is true, I’m still saying this. But this time, I advise you to scream when you feel the need to, to cry if you want to and to have a walk and enjoy a bit of sun. Sometimes one have to listen to its needs. I know we’re supposed to be locked down but we still have the right to live. And when you live in a little flat with no balcony or garden believe me you have to go outside sometimes.

It’s okay to have a drink sometimes. It is okay to play games and have fun more than usual. The thing is, you just can’t loose your goal and give up on you. That’s why I keep saying that we have to take advantage of this lock down.

To do so, I have prepared a list of all the things we could do that I think aren’t boring and still keep us going. It is a fact, if we stay active and continue to work and have a healthy lifestyle, it is going to be easier to go back to “normal” – I’m not expecting things we’ll be the way we used to know – when lock down is finished.

I’m sorry to say it but we should continue to have weeks and weekends, try to stay active and focused during weekdays and more relaxed during weekends. At least that’s the easiest way to tell you’re body you’re still in the race.

I don’t need to tell you what is good or isn’t for you. You’re grown up enough to realise that you spend way too much time in front of screens – same for me – for instance …

In order to stay in the race, I think taking time – because you do have it – to read a book would be really good for everyone of us. Even if the book you’re reading is considered simple, it’s still a good place to start. For instance, my girlfriend advised me to read the 8th tome of Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter and I loved reading the play, unfortunately it’s really easy and quick to read but it gave me the urge to read again. And if you don’t have a lot of books, you can still go online, there is plenty of free ebooks. You can find them here : https://www.free-ebooks.net (give your email address to have 5 free ebooks per month, I tried it).

Why don’t you try to cook?? Just type the ingredients you have home on you search engine and you’ll find a recipe with it! Or just let you’re imagination go and create something of your own. Look, the homemade ravioles I cooked, I’m not a cook and I guarantee you this took me some time to realise!

And since you cook, or maybe when you just clean your place or have a walk, why don’t you try listening to a podcast? I think they’re great for cheering you up and make you learn great things. I could share a lot of them but if I’d have to choose two I would suggest one if you’re curious about spirituality the Highest Self Podcast (the link is to Soundcloud but you can also download any podcast app on smartphone or computer) is quite resourceful and easy to listen to. Simplexity with Alyson Stoner (link to YouTube playlist) is another one that I like to listen to on various subjects.

And I do love Ted Talks, they’re really great and have loads of inspirational subjects, here’s their website. Try The Fringe Benefit of Failure by JK Rowling on their platform!

You like watching movies? Then why don’t you open your horizons and try watching something new? I would definitely suggest The Story of God with Morgan Freeman, Dark Tourist or Explained on Netflix, all really great series I loved watching. Or maybe an old movie, like City of Angels with Nicolas Cage or The Matrix.

You even have the possibility of watching plays from Shakespeare’s Globe!

You can even find a free online course about something you’re interested in! There is Coursera, iTunes U or even Iversity.

I guarantee you doing those things will make you want to take more time and take care of yourself. Personally, I take time to meditate, I share it on this article and to do yoga, I share it on this one. I’m not saying you should do the same but maybe find that one workout you like to do to keep you going. And workout CAN be meditation!

And finally make love, do yourself – and your partner – some good and have a little fun. It’s okay, you have time and this will make you feel better.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. Don’t hesitate to subscribe to the newsletter to receive an email a week with a new article.

And you, what is your favourite thing to do during this lock down? Please share!

Stay tuned, we will have a « guest » in the next article…

Love
